Ciara L Campbell
I am a multimedia artist based in Bristol, UK.
Informed by neuro-sensorial research, my work considers how the body responds to sensory stimuli, examining how variations in light, colour and texture can influence mood and awareness. By blending elements of contemporary art practice with approaches drawn from mindfulness, I aim to create spaces that feel both unfamiliar and comforting. Ultimately, I invite my audience to reflect on what calm feels like, and how a sense of ease can be experienced through art.
Having experienced severe anxiety throughout my childhood, my practice became an outlet for expression at times when I struggled to understand what was happening with my mind. Using my work as a form of social research, I began to explore how art can act as a safe haven for others, creating work that functions as a therapeutic experience for my audience.
Interaction is central to my practice. I create immersive, tactile installations that engage sight and touch, offering physical stimulation that encourages embodied experience. My work invites audiences to move through and explore the space using their bodies, drawing on fundamental human instinct of learning through touch, play and communication. These installations are often structured to prompt conversations around wellbeing, allowing audiences to connect with the work and reflect on their own mental health.
My current work explores the relationship between mental health and sensory experience, often within constructed environments. I work across a variety of media, from acrylic painting to 3D-printed sculpture, to bring these ideas together, forming my interpretation of a contemporary sensory room. These spaces are designed to feel gentle and inviting, incorporating diffused lighting, calming colour palettes, and varied textures. They draw on the language of play while subtly shifting how we perceive and move through space.
